Guide School 2016 dates announced!

We are extremely excited to have set the dates for our 6th annual Guide School.  School this year will be May 1st to May 6th.  You then add 2 shadow days with any of our instructors or Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters guides to complete your 8 day experience.  The price this year is $1600.  We are excited to have back Matt Heron, Jordan Romney, Jay Swartley, and Chuck Ragan as our instructors.  You cannot match a line up like this in any fly fishing guide school in the country.  Water will certainly not be an issue this year as all of you know we are experiencing a historic winter this year.  Healthy for our fisheries and the people who fish them.  We have had a tremendous amount of interest this year so if you are considering joining us this year call Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters and put down a deposit to hold down your spot.  If you have any questions about the school or just want to talk fishing feel free to give me a call.  Stay tuned for additional posts as the dates approach.

Last year’s crew, final day on the American.  End of a great week with a fantastic group of guys!

Owyhee River adventure

I have been out of town and basically “off the grid” for the last two weeks.  Last week was football camp at the University of Idaho which is probably pretty uninteresting to anyone reading this blog post but it is the week before that which should get your attention.  That week I made my way up to the Owyhee River in Southeastern Oregon on a solo trip for 5 days.  It had been on my list for the last couple of years and I had read a bit about it.  So I hooked up the trailer and headed out for a trip that I thought was going to be about 7 hours tops to get there and due to some poor research it wound up being more like 9.  Not an easy place to get too, but once there I figured out the lay of the land and found a simple campsite at the dam for $5 a night.  This included a flat grassy area to put the trailer, big cottonwoods for shade, an outhouse, and a spigot for water.  All this 50 yards from the water. Nirvana!  There were more fisherman than I thought since Boise is about an hour and half away.  I was able to find good water to myself for the entire time I was there as I worked a 2 to 3 mile stretch from the dam to below the campground. There is so much more river to explore. Fishing was spectacular!  Lots of fish 18 inches and bigger.  I caught them slack line and straight line nymphing without any weight.  Leave the indicators at home.  On the surface, since there was a decent PMD hatch every afternoon, and finally on streamers.  I have included a few photos but taking pictures of the fish you caught by yourself with your smart phone is never easy and I am sure quite comical to watch.  I was amazed by the both the quality and quantity of the fish. Mostly browns with a few rainbows mixed in.  This is definitely not an easy place to get too and my advice is to top off your gas tank at every gas station since this is a pretty remote area.  I almost paid a price for not adhering to that rule.  There are no hotels or restaurants in the area so if you are not going to camp you would be traveling about 3 hours every day to and from the river.   It was great being off the grid for three days.  It is about 40 miles round trip to get any cell service.  I was also warned about the amount of rattle snakes in the area but I never saw any.  It was an awesome trip that I will definitely do again and if you like adventure with your fishing so should you.

Just a reminder, I will be running the first of my summer full day Intensive Introduction to Fly Fishing Workshops this Saturday 6/25.  Contact me or the shop if you are interested or have any questions.  Let me get you started or help you with any issues you might be having.  Local waters are fishing very well and that will continue throughout the summer.

Lake Tahoe Community College Workshop

I had the pleasure of doing my first LTCC fly fishing class in a couple of years this past Sunday. What a great time I had with the 4 students who had signed up for the class.  We spent the entire day learning and practicing a variety of skills to help them get on the water, catch some fish, and have some fun. We started at Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters where we talked about equipment, then to Paradise Park in Meyers to work on casting skills, and ended the day on the West Carson River.  I was impressed with their determination and work efforts with their casting, line management, and mending skills.  All of them showed great improvement by the end of the day.  I fully enjoyed their company throughout the day as I got to know them all personally.  That to me is the payoff at the end of a long day.  Connecting with others through an activity like fly fishing is what makes outdoor activities special and meaningful.  I will be doing 3 other full day Introduction to Fly Fishing Workshops this summer.  They take place on 6/25, 7/16, and 8/6.  Contact myself or the shop to sign up or get more information. Class size is limited to 6 people, so sign up and allow me to connect with you.  Also, stay tuned as we are working to make these Introduction to Fly Fishing Workshops even better this summer by adding a few things.  I will keep everyone updated to those additions when we finalize them.

Guide School 2016 wrap up

Guide School 2016 is over and as we all recover from a long but fantastic week I want to take a quick look back at this year’s experience.  The addition of Matt Heron and Jordan Romney as our instructors allowed me to witness fly fishing instruction at the highest level.  I would put these guys up against anyone and feel confident that they are the best.  Jaime Lyle as always was at the top of the game in fly casting instruction and like every year I picked up a few tips for my own casting and teaching.  Our presenters Megan Murray, Erik Elliott, Taylor Green, and Mike Weir from Cal Trout made the classroom portion interesting and informative. Their passion for what they do was evident.  Channel 4 guys, Alex Marguiles and his cameraman Julian were fun to host and we look forward to seeing their report when it airs.  A big thanks to Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters guide Jay Swartley for guiding these guys and helping out with a variety of other things.  We could not have asked for a better and more talented group of students.  Hossein, Eric, Ryan, Steve, and Rob will all make excellent fly fishing guides and instructors.  It is always great to see friendships develop during the week and the bond of fly fishing keep them together for years to come.  Chuck Ragan as mentioned in an earlier post was a late but fantastic addition to the team as a drift boat guiding instructor. Thanks also to Victor Babbitt the owner of Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters for all of his hard work.  As I sit here and recap this years school, I can’t help but think how far we have come since our first year.  We are all very proud of what we have built and feel confident that we are facilitating the fly fishing guide school experience better than anyone in the industry and we are not done. Stay tuned for information on next year’s school.  Here are a few photos from Saturday’s drift boat session on the American River.

Drift boat guiding instructor Chuck Ragan

We had the privilege at this years guide school to have Chuck Ragan as one of our drift boat guiding instructors.  Great teacher, fly fisherman, and guy.  He was a perfect addition to the staff. Yes, and he is also a pretty good musician as I found out after watching several of his videos on youtube.  Really liked his Hot Water Music stuff.  So did my wife.  Anyway I had the privilege of working along side of him and Jordan Romney on the American River on Saturday and I got to see him in his element.  Chuck does his guiding on the rivers and lakes of the Sacramento Valley and does a lot of guide work for the non-profit organization Cast Hope.  He will be a permanent addition to our guide school staff.  Another great bat in the line up.  You can check out his full bio on our website.

Guide School- 3 days in the books, 4 to go

Guide School 2016 is nearing its halfway point and what a fantastic week it has been so far.  First of all we have been blessed to have 5 very talented fly fishermen as students this year.  They are all sticks and great guys to boot.  Secondly, the addition of Matt Heron and Jordan Romney as instructors has exceeded my expectations and they were high to start. Casting with Jaime Lyle on Monday, multiple presentations by some great speakers on Tuesday including Mike Weir from Cal Trout, and the groups first day on the Truckee River this morning.  Great instruction, beautiful weather, good water conditions, and fantastic camaraderie have made this year one of the best for us.  I look forward to seeing how the rest of the week goes and I am sure it will be as good or better than the first half.  Channel 4 KRNV TV from Reno came out and did a story on us today and it will air on their Exploring Our Backyard series.  Reporter Alex Margulies and his cameraman Julian spent the better part of the day with the group.  Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters guide Jay Swartley taught Alex few of the basics and even guided him a portion of the day.  I had to be interviewed and although I knew it was coming and coverage like this for our school is something I have always wanted, I was still completely uncomfortable.  Anyway,  I am extremely proud of what we are doing and look forward to not only the next four days but continuing to grow into the best fly fishing guide school in the country
