Spring in the Sierras!

Filed under: General Comments,General Topics,Regional Travel Reports,River Reports — admin at 5:05 pm on Monday, March 23, 2009

Spring is upon us in the Sierras and has brought us another two feet of much needed snow!  We now have enough snow to make for a great runoff as long as the temps stay cold at night and the day time temps don’t sky rocket.  This is fantastic news!  Our two past winters were less than average making for low water levels everywhere.  So a big thanks goes out to mother nature!

We have been lucky so far this year and have been able to fish all winter.   The East Walker has been fishing great as well as the Little Truckee and the Truckee River.  All have had impressive hatches even in the cold.  The fish have been active and have even been eating dries.   Midges and Baetis have been hatching consistently, especially in the nasty weather.  Bundle up and see for yourself.

For right now, the best place to fish would be the the East Walker River.  We have been having some fantastic days throughout the whole river system and some pretty amazing wildlife viewing.  We have seen Big Horn Sheep, Bald Eagles, numerous deer and not to mention all the trout.  The fish are spread out again and in every seam and bucket.  Just the way the EW should be.  Higher flows have been the key for success lately….if they could only regulate the flows.  Indicator nymphing has been the most productive with small Baetis and midge patterns.  We have also had good luck with streamer fishing.  Fishing streamers is an exciting way to catch bigger, more agressive fish.  The takes are explosive and usually visible when the lighting is right.  If your streamer skills are not up to par then have one of our guides give you a private lesson.  We offer fully guided trips desiged around whatever it is you would like to work on as a fly fisherman.    Call us for up to date fishing reports and don’t forget opening day is coming up.  Reserve a guide now for the opener!

Come on by and check out our shop.  We offer some great deals on art work, and last years gear.  We also have “Fish Eye 4 ” Through anglers eyes available now.  Another great fly fishing movie  from Burl Productions.   Or you can check it out on www.burlproductions.com.    We will be offering over night trips on some of our waters this year, so check in for details.  We also offer intro classes, corporate trips, and fly tying classes.  Come by and check us out in our shop or on our Facebook page.  http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1376561181

Spring Is Here

Filed under: General Topics — Peter at 1:02 pm on Thursday, March 19, 2009

Spring  weather is here and the fishing that goes with it.Time to get out to the river and get into some nice hungry trout. This week I have been fishing quite a bit and our rivers are fishing pretty well.I fished the Little Truckee,Truckee,East Carson and the East Walker rivers and was able to catch nice trout in all of these waters. The Little Truckee has good flows and trout biting baetis and midge patterns both dries and nymphs. Also there are some winter stones hatching with fish rising in the slower water. The road has been plowed clear of snow. The Truckee River is fishing pretty well between storm systems fishing small baetis and mayfly nymphs under an indicator has produced some really nice fish. The East Carson is still fishing a little slow due to cool water temps, don`t get discouraged put your time in.I put four hours in the other day for one bite a 20″ brown trout. The East Walker river,  in my opinion, is the best fishing right now which is fairly typical for this time of year.On the E.W. baetis and midge patterns both dries and nymphs have been producing lots of browns and rainbows with some fish going over the 20″ mark. The stone flies are starting to come off at the E.W. so try some big stone dries and also stone fly nymphs.I fished the E.W. yesterday warm weather good fishing  and Icaught a couple of fish on streamers late in the day.THE BOTTOM LINE IS ,GET OUT AND GO FISHING! Contact us for current coditions and reports. Our guides are available and ready to show you a great time on the river. We are offering overnite trips contact us for pricing. GOOD FISHING.
