Just a quick update folks. We have had some great days out there and we have had a few tough ones as well. With the temps yo-yoing and the water flows doing the same the fishing has bin a bit fickle. Runoff is here and the water in the big “T” has bin cold. Don’t expect fish to move much for your fly, your gonna have to put it on their nose to get a grab. The Little Truckee got a bump in flows which is great for fish, but made the angling tuff with all the slime and snot in the drift. I would expect that to be cleared up by now tho. Bottom line is get out and fish, but know that like always the fish eat on their schedule not yours! Tend those drifts and make everyone count…….see you on the water -Jay
As always, but especially during springtime things can go from zero to a hundred in the blink of an eye. One minute the water appears lifeless and the next it seems every fish in the river is up. A little persistence can go a long way tho. If you don’t let it discourage you and you stick it out most spring days it will turn on for you….eventually.
We are all getting excited for summer now and with that being said we are starting to think beyond just our go to Truckee and Little Truckee. With the Carsons still a swollen and the high country still snowed in its a great time for some stillwater. Spring is a good time for hog hunting and it doesn’t get much better than our own Sawmill Lake at Northstar! Rite now there is a little walking involved on account of snow and mud on the road but if you are willing to walk it is well worth the effort! Give the shop a call to book the lake or with questions. -See ya on the water!
Well it is go time folks, the California general trout season opens tomorrow! With that being said you know we are excited. Sure we have plenty of water that is open year round, but our options are now almost endless! With the promise of water all summer and near perfect flows for the opener things should kick off with a bang.
We took a drive out to the Carson Rivers today and man are flows about perfect. A little bit of off color on the East and just a bit into the grass on the west. A bit of color never hurts, I think sometimes it actually helps. You can get rite up on your fish without spooking them, and the higher flows push fish out of the main current and into the side seams.
If you are in north lake tonight make sure you stop by Blue Coyote in Truckee for Trout Unlimited’s “Fishmas eve” celebration. It’s a great cause with a bunch of great dudes! Also if you get out on the water this weekend feel free to stop by the shop and let us know how you did!
We have had a lot of fun on the water this past week. Fishing has bin great, especially in the afternoon. Its that time of year where things can change real quick tho so check that forecast and bring the rain gear!
Nymphing in the mornings and dry dropper rigs in the afternoons seem to be a good bet. Fish are certainly moving out of those super slow winter lies and into a bit faster water to feed. Come on up and book a guide to make the most of your time, or stop by the shop for bugs and details!
Its fishing good and just getting better up here folks. With spring weather, no summer crowds, and lots of bugs on the menu now is the time to fish! Stop by or call the shop for info and reports, or as always book a guide trip! -See you on the water
P.S. Anyone interested in doing guide school this year should get signed up, we are filling up quick and its gonna be the best yet!
Happy Easter all, I hope you had a great day. I have had the pleasure of being on the water most days this week and man is it great! We have a nice BWO hatch in the afternoons, and indo fishing with small baetis and midge patterns in the morning will do some damage as well.
The Truckee rarely gives up fish easy, but the next 6 weeks or so (river flow/weather permitting) should be some of the best fishing of the year. Come on up and lets get after it before the crowds of summer are here!
It’s officially spring folks and that means we have bugs on the menu and more bugs to come. In case you don’t know that’s a good thing! Fish like bugs and we of course like fish. Rite now we are seeing skwallas and bwo’s on the Truckee and the fishing has bin good. Next up will be March Browns and Pmds.
It’s a great time of year to come up and really take advantage of all that Tahoe has to offer. Logan here came up and skied a few days, then went out with us and stuck his first fish on the fly. Come on up and ski the fresh snow this week then let’s go fish!
No, it won’t be long now. It won’t be long and we will be spending our long summer days chasing trout in our favorite areas again. Soon we will be time to head back into the cold clear mountain streams of summer. Guard socks and wet wading, 3 weights and dry flys. Evening hatches that keep you on the water until well after dark. It will all be here before you know it!
Now is the time to stop procrastinating and start planning! Start looking at the calendar, call those fishing buddies and get those summer trips planed out. With more storms dumping lots of that white stuff on the mountains we are looking forward to our best summer in years! Call or email the shop with any questions, just remember it won’t be long now…..
With the snow on hold for a week or so its a great time to get out on the river. Look for fish in soft water with a little depth. I have often heard the expression “walking speed water”, but probably better would be “slow strolling” speed. Think warm summer evening stroll NOT walking through the parking lot to your car in February speed. Flys should be small and dark color for the most part. Fish aren’t that picky rite now, its just a matter of putting it rite on their nose.
Wintertime is normally working hard to stick a few nice fish, not 20 fish days. If you can get out midweek tho you should have all the best water to yourself. Come up and ski fresh groomers in the morning and fish the warmth of the day. We have guides ready to help hone your winter game and make sure you have the best experience possible. Give us a call or stop by the shop!
Winter time can be really on or really off! its all about being a the rite place at the rite time….and a little luck.
Timing wise it’s a safe bet the early morning hatch thing just isn’t gonna happen. So feel free to sleep in and be a little lazy. Your fish will be doing the same anyways. And as far as the rite place think walking speed water with some good structure.
And of course that big salty lake in the dessert is always worth a go. Look for those windy gnarly days, you know those days when you look outside and think “no I don’t think I wanna go fish today”. That’s the day you wanna go to Pyramid.
We have had some great days out there this fall and looking forward to great winter!
