Guide School 2015 Daily Summary Itinerary

SCHOOL DATES: MAY 4-9, 2015

DAY 1

  • 7am: Meet and greet at shop
  • 8am - 2pm: Casting Clinic with Jaime Lyle @ Paradise Park
  • 3pm - 7pm: West Carson River: Intro to guiding and casting analysis

DAY 2

  • 6:30am: Meet at shop - Group breakfast at Red Hut
  • 8am - 12pm: Classroom Lessons @ Cal Trout offices
    • Marketing strategies - Michelle Santos
    • Building a good relationship - Eric Elliot/CA Fish and Game
    • Sustainability - Mike Weir/Cal Trout
    • Risk management and controlling the things you can - Rick McGuire/Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters
    • First rate guest service - Brendan Burnside/Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters
  • 1pm - 5pm: Pleasant Valley Fly Fishing Preserve:
    • Being properly outfitted
    • The proper first aid kit
    • Casting analysis
    • Various guiding scenarios
    • Knot tying and rigging contest
    • Entomology and fly selection - Rick McGuire/Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters

DAY 3

  • 7am: Meet at shop
  • 8am - 5pm: Truckee River:
    • Guiding and teaching scenarios
    • Logistics and problem solving
    • Weather
    • Casting analysis, training and practice

DAY 4

  • 7am: Meet at shop
  • 8am - 5pm: East Walker River:
    • Guiding and teaching scenarios
    • Working with different learning styles
    • Working with beginners
    • Working with larger groups
    • Casting analysis, training and practice

DAY 5

  • 7am: Meet at shop
  • 8am - 1pm: East Carson River:
    • Guiding and teaching scenarios
    • Guiding the advanced angler
    • Changing flies and rigs efficiently
  • 2pm - 3:30pm: Wrap-up including:
    • Individual Student Evaluations
    • Course Evaluations
    • Graduation
  • 3:30pm - 4:30pm: Casting Competition
  • 5pm - 6:30pm: Group Dinner @ Jaliscos

DAY 6

  • 6:30am: Meet at shop
  • 7am - 8:30am: Travel to Sailor Bar of the American River
  • 8:30am - 4pm: Introduction to drift boat guiding
