Guided Float Trips by Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters
Truckee River Float Trips
Experience a new adventure in Truckee River Fly Fishing
Now offering half-day and full-day guided float trips on the Nevada side of the Truckee River.
The Truckee River is a tailwater that flows for 120 miles starting at Lake Tahoe and ending at Pyramid Lake, NV. Technically a tailwater river, the Truckee flows at times like a freestone stream and at others it will fish like a Spring Creek. There are hatches of Stoneflies, Mayflies, Caddis and Midges throughout the year. With an abundance of bait fish and crawdads, fish can reach over 20 inches in size. One of the most productive ways to fly fish the Truckee River is from a specially equipped raft.
On a float trip, anglers can use a variety of different methods to catch fish. Nyphing with an indicator and stripping streamers are both great ways to catch fish. The average fish is between 15” to 18” with some fish reaching well over 24”. Fish Species for both sections include Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Cuttbows (cross between a Rainbow trout and a Lahontan Cutthroat Trout) and Mountain Whitefish.
The higher flows on the Truckee River to the east of the town of Reno have made it great for Floating. Average half-day floats will be 3 miles of river and full-day float can range from 5-7 Miles of river. There are several sections of river the guide can choose from to float.
Currently we do not offer shuttle service in Reno. Clients are required to meet the guide in Reno and have a vehicle available for the shuttle.
Seasons of the Truckee for floating
Portions of the CA and almost all of the NV sections of the Truckee are open year-round to fly fishing. The river can be floated most of those months, but these are the best:
- February-June (With the exception of Run-off)
- July-August (AM half-day Floats due to water temps)
- September- Mid November (prime-time but flow dependant)
- December is typically to cold to fish
Each month throughout the season offers different rewards. Please contact us for the most up-to-date conditions.
