June Bite is Here
Following this little bit of colder weather over the holiday weekend, the forecast looks promising for the rest of the week. Runoff will continue and we will still be mainly throwing nymph rigs with extra weight, but as flows start to come down we look forward to throwing dries and dry dropper rigs. Main hatches at the moment are march browns, a few caddis/pmds and the beautiful golden stone.
East Carson River:
Flows are high but fish have been stocked before the holiday weekend so it could still be worth the trip out to the river. Nymphing either with a large indicator and lots of weight, or euro nymphing some heavy flies is probably the best bet at catching fish, but streamers and dry dropper rigs might be worth a try as well. Flows have come down as of today due to the cold weather but we expect them to jump back up towards 1000 cfs when it gets warm later this week. The river is tough to cross at these flows but still fishable, unfortunately the real enemy is the brown colored water that makes it tough for fish to see your flies, so fish something big or bright or both.
Truckee River:
Reports are good from this river as fish are starting to spread out and streamers or dry dropper rigs thrown into every seam behind every rock is a fun way to fish this river. Nymphing the buckets is also producing some fish, but when I was out there on this past Tuesday, more fish were being caught in pocket water and tailouts. Hatches are golden stones, march browns, and the few baetis that have not hatched yet. A rumor is going around that the first PMDs are being spotted especially on warm days.
Little Truckee River:
Busy, busy, busy are the reports that our guides are telling me, but fishing has also been pretty good as the PMDs start to show up. Small midges or other tiny stuff has been working in the morning, but as the PMDs start to emerge (even if you only see a few) throw some size 16 or 18 pink/orange pmd dries for a really good time. Dry dropper can be an effective way to fish an emerger and dry fly at the same time if they aren’t eager to eat the dry.
East Walker River:
Mixed reports coming from this river, but overall it seems mostly quality over quantity. Some nice fish have been caught but reports of 1 or 2 fish days are common. Flows are still good at 134 CFS as of today so this consistency should hopefully improve the fishing. Dry dropper is my personal favorite way to fish this river at these flows, hang a heavy nymph 3-4 feet under a big golden stone or chubby chernobyl and throw it into every bit of slow water next to fast water. The fish like to be lazy but still have a conveyor belt of food coming their way. Nymphing and streamers should work as well.
Stillwater Options:
The state continues to stock many of the lakes in the area so fishing is pretty good. Our higher alpine lakes are also starting to thaw so ice out continues at higher elevations. If you’re interested in fishing a Private lake, Sawmill lake located at Northstar has been stocked with trophy rainbows and is open up to the boat launch.
