Spring Warm-Up

It sure was nice to get one last monster storm that proved to be a wet April. For us anglers in the know of things, these first few warms days can kick up a frenzy with rivers in great (but high) condition, and bugs starting to come off on the river.

East Carson River:

The river was in good form the last few days and including through the last storm. The usual spots were fishing well with higher than average flows, but clear water and some bugs. With these higher temps coming this week, look for the river to rise again and be a bit off color. That’s when you’ll need to go back to working the edges with flashy or large flies like last week. Truckee River:

The Truckee has fished great if you’re willing to walk a little further than the pack. The usual spots around Glenshire have seen some traffic, but there are good reports coming off Dry Dropper rigs in this area, with improving temps and water clarity. As usual, nymphing is king, but you might need some extra weight with the higher flows. Try to throw some subsurface baetis or midge patterns, and if you’re lucky enough to catch them sipping in the slow water, try that 20 dry. Flow Chart

Little Truckee River:

Stay away from the redds - fish are moving in and will start building their habitat of pleasure. Flows have been steady at 160 cfs- prime for early Spring fish. Fish can hold in different places at these flows than what you suspect so walk and toss while you hole hop. Flow Chart

East Walker River:

Closed in California but open in Nevada. The flows have been really low and continuing lower. Last week saw 40-44. This week we even saw 35. If you just can’t stay away, dry dropper through the buckets and small streamers along the edges. There’s always the cray cray in this watershed and different small crayfish variations can produce. Stillwater Options:

Progress on the ice outs has been slowed a bit by the recent weather we’ve had but Indian Creek continues to fish. Rig 6’ to 10’ under the bobbercator and look for slight wind to create chop. Conditions on stillwater should improve rapidly once the ice melts around the Sierra lakes.
